I wonder how many young drivers could find the headlight dimmer switch on those old vehicles. :wft:

Easy, right next to the parking brake.

Manual transmissions, whether on the column or on the floor, are about the best anti-theft devices there are anymore. Only a small fraction of your average would-be car thieves know how to drive stick.

Not really. On the Commando there was a pull out parking brake under the left side of the dash. You are close though. Man it needs to stop snowing or this could get crazy. :-D

Is knowing how to use an old antiquated piece of equipment now a source of pride?

No it is just a topic of conversation when I am bored due to crappy weather. I do like old 4x4s though.

Planet54 - will do! My uncle sold it soon after he came back east. Not much use for it around here. Most regular trailheads in New England are accessible with 2WD vehicles, and you could probably get to the 'rough' ones in a Subaru Outback.

Being an old fart, I know where it is. I don't know how many oncoming drivers I blinded because of those left foot dimmer switches. They always came around a curve when I was in the middle of shifting, and my left foot was busy working the clutch. Come to think of it, a lot of young drivers would probably have no idea what that third pedal is for.
