Unfortunate to see that after just three seasons Bluebird Backcountry, the so-called first liftless ski resort, has closed. I never understood the concept, although it sure did get a lot of press when opening. I'm wondering how much the odd location impacted their potential user base; driving past multiple resorts and BC ski areas to get there.

unsurprising. it was an odd business model from the start, and like you mentioned, I never really understood their sales pitch.

It seemed appealing to have a place you could "backcountry" ski without having to be constantly attuned to avalanche conditions. Beats resort skinning before the lifts start turning and could beat the risk and paranoia that come with doing your own terrain and snowpack assessment.
