Susan: Thanks for the recommendation. "Levy also wrote another of my favorite polar exploration books, Labyrinth of Ice: The Triumphant and Tragic Greely Polar Expedition,"
Got it from the library and read it in 3 days. Excellent!

"The Hiking Book From Hell" by Are Kalvo. Sort of a Norwegian version of Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods".

"River of Lost Souls: The Science, Politics, and Greed Behind the Gold King Mine Disaster" by Jonathan P. Thompson

Although it bills itself as a book about the Gold King Mine spill in 2015, it might be more about the history and development of Silverton and greater San Juan basin. Fascinating to read about the history of the area, and be able to recognize historical names from the peaks or other features in the areas.

"One Man's West" by David Lavender, after whose brother, Dwight Lavender, both Lavender Peak (La Platas) and the Lavender coulior on Sneffels were named.
Easy, fun read,, and an interesting account of early climbing in the San Juans, as well as mining and ranch life in early/mid 1900s.

Just finished Disappointment River by Brian Castner. Very good historical account of Alexander Mackenzie’s (and team’s) search for the northwest passage down the Deh Cho (Mackenzie) River in Northwest Territories of Canada. The author parallels that trip in 1789 with his own version by canoeing the entire 1,125 miles of the river to the Arctic Ocean in 2016 (or so). Highly recommend. Very interesting history of the Voyageurs era in Canada along with the author’s own expedition in modern times.

Next up:
Going to finally give Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian a try, yet quite violent and grisly apparently.

Still need to get around to the Immortal Irishman too; planned for this winter.

I've been wanting to read this as well. Especially now since the last article I read about McCarthy said, Blood Meridian is "unfilmable."
But 'they' said that about Life of Pi as well, and that turned out pretty damn fantastic (I thought).

We’ll see how much I can stomach.

Yes, Life of Pi, the book and movie, were super good.

Awesome! McCarthy is my favorite author, and BM is my favorite book. Try to think of the gratuitous violence as a plot device; the point is to quickly desensitize you, which mirrors the moral decline of the book's subjects. If you find yourself struggling to follow the format of the prose, I highly recommend Richard Poe's narration in the audiobook.

Year of the Rat, it's an interesting look at how the Clinton Administration sold out America to Chinese interests in exchange for campaign financing.

Given world events and China's progress over the past few decades, I'd say the chickens are coming home to roost.

Blood Meridian is excellent, and much of the bare facts of the Glanton Gang’s expedition are historically accurate. If you are new to Cormac McCarthy, his most accessible writing is arguably the Border Trilogy that begins with All the Pretty Horses. Excellent and far more pathos than the detached violence of Blood Meridian. Having read his entire canon, I can recommend almost all of it although I had a hard time getting into his latest: Stella Maris / The Passenger.

Yep, I read All the Pretty Horses and the second of that trilogy, but not the third. And have read the Road and No Country for Old Men. McCarthy can be pretty ruthless and it sounds like BM takes it to another level. We’ll see how it goes. Again, I appreciate the insight from a couple folks here on McCarthy and BM.
