Colorado Wolves Reintroduction

Post by wmanke13 »

How long until the population is large enough to expand across the entire state? How large of a population could the state support, and how large will the government let the population get before they interfere?

I'm excited about this.

Only qualified wildlife biologists can answer those questions, but I'm glad it's happening. It was kind of funny being in Jackson County a while back and seeing people with signs in their yards saying "if you voted for wolf reintroduction you aren't welcome here."

I kind of wish it didn't take a vote to make ecosystem restoration happen, but it was needed to provide political cover for what should happen anyway. There are going to be issues around hunting (legal and illegal: https://www.cpr.org/2023/11/28/shooters ... n-wyoming/) but I guess that just means we need more wolves so they can't kill them all...

No doubt any released in Grand County will quickly make their way into RMNP and deal with the over population of Elk.

They will spread through the state very quickly. There will be a lot of conflict with ranchers. If you think RMNP is a zoo now, then wait until the wolves get there. Many that cross into Wyoming and Utah will be immediately shot.

Ironically killing wolves is likely only to increase livestock deaths. Wolves do not typically hunt livestock unless something in their pack is thrown out of balance (like one of pack being shot).

But they will def kill livestock and it's already happening in Colorado with the very few wolves we have currently. I don't care what that study says about shooting them or not. If you kill enough wolves then there will absolutely be less conflict between ranchers and wolves. In Colorado specifically, I think there is going to be a lot of conflict between ranchers and wolves. I'm actually pro wolf, just stating what I think is going to happen. Colorado has a s**t ton of people. Very different than Wyoming and very different than northern Minnesota and the upper peninsula. It is going to be interesting to see if apex predators like wolves can coexist with humans in the Colorado we have today.

Would like to think we could but have we (humans) ever been able to? History is not on the side of the predator...

Grizzlies' gains over the last 20 years gives me cautious optimism...

It's now the 12 essentials. Don't forget your bear spray and big stick.

Am I reading the article and the map in it correctly? Most people voted NO in 2020, but they are doing it anyway? I don't live in CO so I don't have a wolf in the fight, but I wonder why the state voted on this it wasn't binding.

You're reading it incorrectly.
