Went most of the way up a high 12er today in the SJs. Facet factory below tree line and wind hammered sastrugi above. Slim pickings but the NE facing BTL gully we skied was in all the way to the valley floor.
Traveling light is the only way to fly.

Slide hazard seems to be a mixed bag. In the SJs, sunny aspects are really starting to melt-freeze cycle and corn. Can still find cold snow on north aspects and sheltered areas. Thinner areas are still facet sandwiches and a bit sketch to me. Got out in south Silverton yesterday. Besides shallow point releases on solar aspects we didn’t see any recent slide activity. Wasn’t a summit ski but close enough. Found a few inches of supportable fresh not the least bit wind affected.

Definitely not spring yet, a time of year when patience is rewarded, not just from a safety perspective but also quality of the climb and descent, the transitional snowpack can be less than stellar, especially the lingering breakable crash. Allowing for consolidation can increase both safety and enjoyment, and that’s something that everyone can get on board with.

Always best to avoid shallow areas regardless of the green light forecast…

This week's storm looks like one of those ones you pray for for the low snow zones. (Sangres, San Luis, S Sawatch, Pikes)
