How do you know someone has "broken free from [a] manufactured reality"?XterraRob wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 8:50 amIn a world of bored 1st worlders, people emotionally cling to the socio-political identities and struggles given to them by mass media. It's difficult for most people to develop the self awareness necessary to change course from the social conditioning and emotional programming that's been systematically ingrained in them throughout their lives. Those of us who are lucky enough to break free from our manufactured reality are able to value people for their true character and perspectives, independent of the propaganda. There aren't very many people out there that are like that, but we're out there!crossfitter wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2024 10:35 am I'll leave this thread with one final parting thought:
The main benefit of diversity is having a range of perspectives and viewpoints, in order to attack problems from different angles. Boiling diversity down into immutable characteristics and attacking anyone that thinks differently or dissents from the prevailing narrative is entirely counterproductive. I would posit that right-of-center hikers face more challenges in being accepted in this community than any intersectional identity. Something to think about when your first reaction is to lump someone into your most-hated niche and dismiss them.
You guys can have the last word.

All hail XterraRob! May his wisdom and guidance grant me the strength and "self-awareness" to finally break free from the "social conditioning and emotional programming" that the "mass media" has forced upon me. Hear his words, or suffer a lifetime in the "manufactured reality"!

There are many that refer to him as Nostradumbass.terribletigzy wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 10:53 am All hail XterraRob! My mistake. It wasn't clear that you know this person and what color s/he is and his/her life experiences well enough to preach about living in others' skins. I won't presume to misjudge you or your intentions based on my own accumulated trauma or ideas of how people should think or act.terribletigzy wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 8:27 amI would love for you to elaborate on the irony of this post. I was offended by someone's decision to make a post that was directly offensive to many members of this community (as you can see by the many responses in this thread). Don't be butt hurt because you can't freely speak hate anymore.Matt wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 5:03 pmCase in point. I'm more put off by this post than any other in the thread. The irony. We all choose what offends us.terribletigzy wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 11:33 am
This has massive "white man claims we live in a post-racial society because he has never experienced racism" energy. You don't know the experience of others, and what it is like to live in their skin.
It's funny how defensive people get when they are called out on not being nearly as accepting and caring as they are pretending to be. There's a whole lot of discussion about why we don't need to discuss the LGBT hiking community with a meaningless "but I am sooooo accepting" at the end of the post. Impeding the discussion of uncomfortable topics is a tactic that has been used forever to keep the oppressed communities oppressed. Conversation and discussion is a very important tool for true acknowledgement and acceptance of all marginalized communities. The LGBT communities have experienced horrendous oppression and hate through the years, and continue to do so today. This is quite possibly one of the most important topics to draw attention to.
But seriously... Here's what I think about this and so many topics.

Well thank god nobody gay walked into that bar! Someone brave and outspoken might have to step-up and intervene before things get too flamboyant in there!Matt wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 3:08 pmMy mistake.
