Trying to do Capitol Peak on 9/7 with someone who wants to day hike it. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm in shape enough for a day hike of Capitol, so hoping to hike up, camp, and meet them in the morning on the trail. Trying to see if anyone may have an extra camping spot on their Capitol Lake permit for 9/6?
Also heard there may be some camping spots along the way up if anyone has any beta to share. Feel free to PM if you want.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Looking to join camping permit for Capitol Peak on 9/5-6?
There are camping spots within a couple miles of the lake that would not require reservations. It wouldn’t save you a ton but it’s better than day tripping the entire route.
It’s not who you think you are that holds you back; it’s who you think you’re not.

Can confirm, we did this over labor day weekend. Excellent camping about 0.8 miles from the lake (on hiker's left when you're waking towards the lake, just past the final creek crossing before the lake)

Isn’t that well within the permitted area? The maps of the zones are less than high quality, but it appears the zone starts around the 2 mile mark from the lake, near 10.2k.
I know there should be a sign on the ground indicating where camping is permit only, but haven’t been up there since it started so maybe the map and sign are wildly inconsistent?

We hiked to Capitol Lake a coupe of weeks ago, 0.8 miles below the lake would require permits. The zone starts at the cattle gate, at least that is where the signage indicating permits required beyond this point was located. So unfortunately camping in the non-permit zone could mean you have some bovine companions (and cowpies).

Thanks for all the good beta
Quick update that plans changed and we're now doing Capitol on Saturday. Still looking to join a camping permit at the lake, now on 9/6. Otherwise it looks like I'm tenting with the cows!
