Re: 2024 Goals
Wow! Not only have I not completed one single goal I set out to, I haven’t even climbed a single 14er this summer. As for these particular goals, I did at least try.
Snowmass - issue at log jam, wasn’t in shape anyways.
Maroon - 50 mph wind on reservation day.
Sunlight / Windom - Drove out there but train grounded due to rockslide.
El Diente - Still hoping to climb in less than 2 weeks.
Moral of the story is, goals are healthy. And if we set goals we should try our best to follow through on making good on them. But that’s really all we can do, and sometimes factors beyond our control can override what our general plan was. I think it’s important for all of us to remember to not take this all too seriously. Anyone (including myself) who uses corporate / business terminology like, “fell short”, “not good enough”, “fulfilled all goals” or “exceeded expectations” for a leisure activity may want to consider a quick recalibration. It’s a hobby. As others have said, more important goals can pop up in certain ways that make walks in the mountains pale in comparison. Life marches on.

Re: 2024 Goals
I don't think I listed my goals on this thread, but they were to climb the hardest 14ers in the Elks this summer.
As such, I achieved that goal, sans Snowmass.
Capitol, Pyramid, and the Bells took almost everything that I had in terms of fitness. Not quite all that I had in terms of technical difficulty.
God is good and kept me safe.

BIG DAY

Re: 2024 Goals
snowmass is a marathon. like, eerily close to literally being the same distance. i have soooo many things i would have done differently so if you ever want an opinion for your attempt, shoot me a PM so i don't clutter this thread with "would've, could've, should've"sseannunn wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 10:34 am I don't think I listed my goals on this thread, but they were to climb the hardest 14ers in the Elks this summer.

Re: 2024 Goals
This ended up being a good plan. Work/family stuff took up a good deal of my time in late July and mid-late August so that slowed me down a bit. I got out and did some cool mountains this summer so far though, including Snowmass in July. Seems to be a popular goal this year. Still some time now to get a few more done before snow sets in and I take a break.PJ88 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2023 4:47 pm Not making a specific set of goals in 2024 because weather/life always diverts me. I still have a great time, but am disappointed I didn’t do the peaks i set out to do. I plan to make a reservation to bag snowmass in late July, but otherwise just stay healthy and have fun getting into the mountains as much as I can.

In addition to my yearly goals for Colorado peaks, I have a mid to late June road trip planned with my wife to travel the Maine coast eating real seafood, going to Acadia National Park, and then crossing over a few states to hit some peaks that are on my bucket list. It would be nice to hang out in the White Mountains again and scale some more of those peaks but it will have to wait until another time.
Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont:
1. Mount Katahdin Completed on June 25th taking the Helon Taylor trail over Pamola Peak, Chimney Peak, and the South Peak. Returned via the Saddle Trail.
2. Mount Washington Completed on June 28th taking the Ammonoosuc Trail and looping back on the Jewell Trail. This was an interesting day. Mt Washington Observatory recorded 83 mph gusts that morning, the lowest wind chill for the day was 8 degrees, there was rime ice on the rocks, the summits were socked in with fog, and the low temperature for the day was 27 degrees which was also a record for the date. I arrived at the summit just before 9:00 AM but the winds were still high and I suspect the temps were still near their lows. I was almost blown over twice trying to get a summit photo by the sign.
3. Mount Monroe Due to the high winds and cold temperatures when I reached the Lake of the Clouds Hut, I decided to skip Mt Monroe and head straight for Mt Washington. It wasn't far away but I still couldn't see it in the fog. And I was hiking with a separated left shoulder courtesy of my blunders when completing Katahdin a few days before. I decided Mt Washington was enough.
4. Mount Clay (sub-peak) Did not complete. See text for number 3, Mt Monroe above.
5. Mount Mansfield Did not complete due to rain and thunderstorms.
Colorado:
1. Humboldt Peak Completed August 18th.
2. Crestone Needle Completed August 20th, East Gully.
3. Crestone Peak (Thunderstorms arrived too early to attempt.)
4. Pike's Peak Completed August 22nd.
5. Long's Peak (Thunderstorms arrived too early to attempt.)
6. Mount Meeker (Thunderstorms arrived too early to attempt.)
7. Redcloud Peak Completed September 6th.
8. Sunshine Peak Completed September 6th via Redcloud.
9. San Luis Peak Completed September 2nd, South Ridge Route.
10. Mount Shavano Completed September 4th.
11. Tabeguache Peak Completed September 4th via Shavano.
12. Mount of the Holy Cross (Had to go home a day early due to events at home.)
13. PT 13,248 (Had to go home a day early due to events at home.)
14. PT 13,831 - Holy Cross Ridge (Had to go home a day early due to events at home.)

Re: 2024 Goals
It has been very mixed year for me so far. I have been getting out, but with my son's knee surgery and being isolated out of town for work I haven't had a technical partner for very many climbs and haven't done that many technical canyons either.
So far this year I have only missed two days of hiking or climbing, both due to airlines in the past couple of weeks. I thought I could squeeze in for a hike flying to Italy that day, but our baggage was delayed and we had to wait for it. Flying home from Switzerland the plane was also delayed so I didn't make it home in time to do a hike. As of yesterday I'm at 253 days.
Some of my main goals accomplished this year that have been on the list for a long time were climbing the Grand Teton and completing West Canyon. As a last minute trip I went to the Alps with my daughter and we climbed a 4000er (Castor) and did the Tour du Mont Blanc, but this actually broke my goal of staying in the country this year.
Working in Aguilar (Colorado) much of the year I got to see a lot of new territory, but that project was hell.
Of note, this year so far has been the year of low elevations. The highest so far I have been in 13,862' at Castor in the Alps. The highest I have been in the US is 13,775' at the Grand Teton. This is unusual for me and the longest I have gone without reaching higher than that in many years.
Generic Goals for 2024
As of September 11:
Total Hiking, Climbing, and Canyoneering Days = 350-Currently at 253 and am ahead of schedule. I still wish I didn't miss those two days. @#$% airlines.
Total Days Hiking, Climbing, Canyoneering, and Biking Days = 360-Currently at 253 and I am ahead of schedule.
Summits Climbed = 150-Currently at 139. I am ahead of schedule.
New Summits Climbed = 60-Currently at 46. I am just a little ahead of schedule.
States to Climb Summits in = 6-Currently at 7 (Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Wyoming, Texas, and Oklahoma) so this goal has been met.
Countries to Climb Summits in = 1. Currently at 4. An odd goal perhaps, but my goal this year was actually to stay in this county and only visit this one. I blew that one as I just got back from the Alps and climbed peaks in three countries there.
Rock Towers/Technical Buttes = 10-Currently at 0. I am way behind schedule. Does anyone out there want to do some. Please?
Technical Rock or Ice Routes = 30-Currently at 8. I am way behind schedule. Does anyone out there want to do some. Please?
Gym Climbing Days = 30-Currently at 3. Since I'm working out of town this year I likely won't make this one or come close.
Technical Canyons = 30-Currently at 10. I am way behind schedule and considering the places I am working I probably won't make this one.
Biking Days = 30-Currently at 3. I'm not in a big hurry for this one, but I do need to get on my bike more this year.
Lose Weight in lbs. = 20 (currently at 262)-Lost 4 lbs. Hopefully I keep it off.

Do any of the above look interesting to anyone out there? I could use some partners. For technical routes, I'd be open to joining others on climbs of their choice as well.

Re: 2024 Goals
My goal this year was a summit of Longs and my gut after several failed attempts on the Keyhole for some reason was telling me I would succeed at the Loft. Just call it intuition I guess. I've spent decades of my hiking looking up at Longs and Meeker wanting them. Towering above. Well, this summer I managed a solo ascent of Meeker and Longs on my first ever attempt of the Loft. Damn proud of that achievement, it was easily my hardest day in the mountains in my life.
