How did the East Ridge of Elbert make the "Classic Routes" list? I don't think it's a bad hike, but it seems out of place compared to most of the others.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

East Ridge of Elbert? Obviously, because you can ride a bike down it.

And it ALSO has bowling ball-sized rocks!

also route to the highest point in CO so that's something.

Perhaps Roach wanted some routes of each difficulty level represented? The Barr trail and Quandary East Ridge are also there. All very accessible routes to anyone on the Front Range with decent fitness and likely where many people start their mountain journey. I don't have a large sample size, but of the people I've met who have only done one 14er, it's usually one of those three. Or Sherman, but it's easy to see why that route isn't really scenic or enjoyable enough to be a classic.

I do think as far as Class 1 "Classic" routes goes those three are pretty good choices. They are probably 3 of the most done 14er hikes in the state and really are part of most peoples' initiation into the experience.

As far as things go, Classic usually swaps between "Popular, high traffic, good quality for what it is" and "Low traffic, but exceptional". You can see that in the list Gerry puts together. The Great Traverses see 100x as much traffic as something like Stettner's Ledges or Crestone's North Pillar.

If Gerry's 14er classic routes get old, there's always the RMNP, IPW, and 13er classics....

I'm sure his LCW guidebook has classic routes as well.

Among my Colorado books I do have the Roach, 3rd edition, but the first book I acquired is A Climbing Guide to Colorado's Fourteeners, Borneman and Lampert, 20th anniversary edition. Found a forgotten surprise in that battered book. On the inside covers I'd written down the peaks as I summitted them: 1, Grays,9-8-99, to 58, Mt Wilson, 8-29-12. Good guide, good memories.
