Good for them!

This comment below is interesting as the terrain looked wide open with a clear view to the sky (i.e. not obscured by a canyon or thick forest). Wonder why the message didn't go through. Folks with SOS devices should wonder.

"After the group’s search-and-rescue message did not go through via satellite phone, they decided to self-rescue..."

"Satellite phone" could just as easily have been one of the newer smartphones with limited satellite texting capability. Those use a far more limited satellite network than does Garmin. A few days ago I met a woman trying to use the satellite texting capability on her phone after her car broke down. She spent more time waiting for a satellite to come into range than she did actually texting.

As of right now, there's 330 satellites in the Starlink Direct to Cell constellation. There's 66 active satellites currently in the Iridium constellation. More likely, the Iridium bird wasn't in view, or directly overhead...

I believe markf was meaning the iPhone SOS sat feature which uses Globalstar with even less satellites (24) than Iridium. Not the Starlink direct to cell (has any major carrier even broadly rolled that out yet?)

Correction, 579 satellites are currently up there and it's available in a beta version for all customers/providers? Also read that it's also available for free to some first responder services. With SpaceX predicting 160-180 launches in 2025 it's just a matter of time before the switch is flipped for wider services and providers...
