Wager Gulch/Carson Pass

Has anyone been up Wager Gulch to Carson Pass or the townsite this summer?
I read about potential road improvements a year ago, so I am curious if that's accurate.
I drove it 4 or 5 years ago to the pass. And have walked it.
Is it any better?

I drove my stock 4Runner up there to Carson Saddle this weekend. The last mile is very rocky and close to my limit, but no damage was done. There is a lot of ATV traffic too which was tough to maneuver around on the lower narrow road.

It would be nice if that road got some maintenance! I was last up there... 2023? That last mile is narrow and rutted. There are a few steep/chunky sections before that, too (4-Low should handle it no problem). If you've driven up the road to Antero, it's a bit like that.

My '98 4Runner got up, but I'll second the notion that I wouldn't want to push my luck any further!

We drove it yesterday to car camp, and out today.
I drove it last in summer 21 or 22.
I don't know if anything really got worse, but the long uphill chunky area down low definitely did get some work done to it!
Stock 4runner and stock Tundra.
We camped below the pass, at last switchback on an old road entrance.
This was a better camping spot than on pass like I did last time.
Plus, Creede 100 Miler was going on this weekend, so there were race people on pass and around.

It's good to hear that the chunky, steep section down lower is cleaned up. I think it was just after a split where the better road goes left and you have to go right!

Thanks, Darin. I will be in the area and arriving on the weekend the first time. I'd forgotten about this road. Haven't been up there in over a decade.
More camping options are appreciated. I don't remember if there are any lower than you were..?
I'm also glad the lower section is more chill. Getting used to a new vehicle.

Hey Matt!
Between Carson townsite and where we parked there wasn't any pullouts.
So options would be places prior to townsite.
I've carcamped at townsite before, although it wasn't as level as one would think from what I remember. Rocks under tires helped.

I have camped at the pass too, but it's more exposed to wind and a marmot den nearby (at least there was in summer '22 when I was there last).

Was there June 7th.

Seems there are a few primitive campsites along the road.

I believe there’s a campsite here

And I camped at the log cabin site on the east side of the road.

I believe both are before you get to the Carson Site.

I camped at the townsite many years ago, but last year when I was up there the townsite was posted with No Trespassing signs.

I thought I had heard about that on the forum but we didn't see anything posted at the entrance over the weekend.
We didn't drive into the townsite on this trip, so maybe the signs are over there?
