Re: Fire near Ouray
Obviously worried for the town.
But this could run a VERY long way to the northeast, into the Cimarrons. That area hasn't burned in recent memory.

Our power was shut off for a few hours yesterday here in SE Utah for this very reason. Buckle up, it’s shaping up to be the fire season we feared.

If planning on travel in the area, be aware Hwy 550 south of Ridgway is closed.
No indication of when it may open

Cutler Creek and Dexter Creek are both toast. The winds here today are terrifying. All week looks hot, dry, sunny, no rain and windy. It could run into Wetterhorn Basin if it wanted. As a Montrose resident and frequent runner of all the trails back there....endless fuel. I have a feeling this one is going to really change the landscape.RyanSchilling wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2026 9:45 am Obviously worried for the town.

Re: Fire near Ouray
Im on the road to the Wilson group via Kilpacker and have a buddy already there. Any thoughts on if we should bail on the plans over the next 2 days? He said this morning was fairly clear but obviously things change.

This fire on mt massive seems to be blowing up fast, huge smoke plume is visible from fairplay.goingup wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2026 4:26 pmCutler Creek and Dexter Creek are both toast. Re: Fire near Ouray
The fire near Ouray will not bother you. You are SW from the area burning and it is moving to the NE.
That said, the whole area is a tinderbox and new fires are happening at an alarming rate.

Re: Fire near Ouray
The plume has since crested the Front Range as well. It can be seen on the weather radars out of Grand Junction and Denver too. This likely means it's quite serious, with plume-dominated fire behavior occurring.evanb123 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2026 5:41 pmThis fire on mt massive seems to be blowing up fast, huge smoke plume is visible from fairplay.goingup wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2026 4:26 pmCutler Creek and Dexter Creek are both toast. Re: Fire near Ouray
Ugh.
Three firefighters died Saturday in a blaze in western Colorado, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Sunday.
"Last night, we learned that three wildland firefighters—serving with the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Wildland Fire Service—lost their lives on Saturday, June 27, while responding jointly to the Knowles and Gore fires along the Colorado-Utah border," Burgum said in a Sunday post on the social platform X.
"Additionally, two wildland firefighters were injured in the line of duty and have been transported to a hospital," he added. "This is terrible news and a reminder of what our first responders risk every time they go out to prevent devastation and protect Americans from natural disasters."

Re: Fire near Ouray
Thanks, but bailing in case of road closures and additional fire risk. There is also the Doe Canyon one to the SW and with all of these fires popping up I don’t want to chance it coming our way.
