My son is visiting from Ohio mid-September and we want to stargaze. Guanella Pass seems a good location. Any other recommendations?
We'd be in the parking lot sometime between 7-10. Should we expect a lot of cars then? --Thanks!

In terms of other places to look, you'll want dark skies and high elevation, in that order.AnnieUpHigh wrote: ↑Sat Aug 22, 2026 4:33 pm My son is visiting from Ohio mid-September and we want to stargaze. Guanella Pass seems a good location. Any other recommendations?

You might try https://darksitefinder.com/, scroll down to the map, and enter the coordinates for Guanella Pass (39.59514, -105.71086).

Guanella Pass is a popular place, but most hikers should be gone from the parking lot by 7 PM in mid-September.AnnieUpHigh wrote: ↑Sat Aug 22, 2026 4:33 pm We'd be in the parking lot sometime between 7-10. Should we expect a lot of cars then?

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, an hour west of Colorado Springs, is a designated International Dark Sky Park. Check out their Dark Sky Program at https://www.nps.gov/flfo/night-sky-programs.htm. There might be a program in September or you could contact Colorado Springs Astonomical Society at csastro.org to see if they have upcoming events.
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
