I hate to admit it, but I'm with crossfitter on this one.
14ers need more altruism and selflessness. Finishing the 14ers is a lofty goal, but just because you identify with a specific group of people, say... I dunno, crossfitters, and want to make your 14ers finisher be special by say... I dunno, being the first to carry a keg of beer up your final peak to much celebration and picture taking, it doesn't make you special. Let's make it about the mountains again. The mountains, humility, and the lack of narcissism.
Afterall, the mountains don't care about what group you identify with.
Lets be friends, make banter great again. Making fun of each other and having a good laugh about it is the way. No need to toot your own horn when people will do it for you a decade+ later
- A mountain is not a checkbox to be ticked
- Alpinism and mountaineering are not restricted to 14,000 foot mountains
- Judgment and experience are the two most important pieces of gear you own
- Being honest to yourself and others about your abilities is a characteristic of experienced climbers
- Courage cannot be bought at REI or carried with you in your rucksack

Happy that you survived this encounter with Kafka. That cat was filthy!

I'll leave this thread with one final parting thought:
The main benefit of diversity is having a range of perspectives and viewpoints, in order to attack problems from different angles. Boiling diversity down into immutable characteristics and attacking anyone that thinks differently or dissents from the prevailing narrative is entirely counterproductive. I would posit that right-of-center hikers face more challenges in being accepted in this community than any intersectional identity. Something to think about when your first reaction is to lump someone into your most-hated niche and dismiss them.
You guys can have the last word.

Has anyone finished the 14ers while being a self identified right-of-center, middle class white man?

Awww, OK, that sounds good and I can abide. Happy to make fun of you any time, the "oppressed white man" schtick provides plenty of material. Just don't let another couple of years pass before giving me an opportunity.
1) Angel Olsen - High & Wild
2) girl in red - i wanna be your girlfriend
3) Caroline Rose - Blood on your Bootheels
4) Brandi Carlile - Broken Horses (I really wish that the remaining members of Soundgarden will tour with her, she's said that's one of her dreams)
5) Tegan and Sara - Hell

You should know that you are loved. I may be boring straight white dude, but I am totally gay for you.
And you clearly are a force for good, because you've brought 12ersRule back from self-imposed exile. Don't be strangers, both of you! Remember Leonard Cohen's immortal words:

Atta boy.
Was wondering (sorta) how this thread was going on my trek back west. Aaahh, west…
Saw this thread and knew I needed some time to sift through it.
I'm just here for the long, sometimes thoughtful posts, about nuanced topics, that contain one sentence someone chooses to copy and reply to as if it sums up the entirety of the argument and person in general. Lol.

In a world of bored 1st worlders, people emotionally cling to the socio-political identities and struggles given to them by mass media. It's difficult for most people to develop the self awareness necessary to change course from the social conditioning and emotional programming that's been systematically ingrained in them throughout their lives. Those of us who are lucky enough to break free from our manufactured reality are able to value people for their true character and perspectives, independent of the propaganda. There aren't very many people out there that are like that, but we're out there!
