Water sources along Missouri Gulch Trailhead

Post by oilfieldtrashoes17 »

Looking to find out some information on the Missouri Gulch Trailhead. My buddy and I will be climbing the Belford Group at the beginning of August and I was curious on what there is for water sources particularly where the Trailhead forks to climb Missouri or Belford and Oxford, since that's where we're setting up camp. Hope to have some light shed on this topic thanks.

There's a big 'ol creek running pretty much all the way down Missouri Gulch. It should be quite full this time of year, given how much snow remains on the N face of Missouri.

You're actually not near the river for much of the first part of the hike. After crossing the bridge, you'll lose easy water access until 10800ft when you recross the river. Until near the junction at 11800ft water can be accessed, but not always easily. There is easy water access near the junction of Elkhead Pass/Belford (your campsite), but once you start climbing Belford don't expect water other than some snowmelt trickles that are hard to drink from.

Hmm, I seem to remember the trail going close to the creek for a while near treeline (11.3-11.5). There are some good campsites right around there as well. In any case, it's never very far from the creek in that stretch.

It does go close-ish, but many of those spots require a nice little willow-wack to get down to the river. The areas I've mentioned are the easy water access spots.
