Crested Butte--Scarp and West Maroon

Post by steelfrog »

Quick question: I have a high clearance but not 4WD van; can I make it to Irwin Lake Lodge and West Maroon trailheads next weekend (if dry)?

Looking to do Scarp Ridge middle loop and West Maroon to Haslett Pass.

Thanks!

Did you mean Hasley Pass? You will need some clearance, but not 4WD drive to make it to the top of Schofield Pass to get to the West Maroon Pass/Hasley Pass trail from the Crested Butte side:

The road to Lake Irwin is also 2WD, but from there to the abandoned lodge and Scarp Ridge trail is quite a bit rougher and I'd want 4WD for it if it was me (it also involves a creek crossing at some point after Lake Irwin I believe, but it's been 10 years since I've been up there so my memory is fuzzy). See this Summitpost page for more info:

Enjoy, it's a beautiful area!

P.S. If you have time/good weather continuing to Gunsight Pass is worth the effort.

Schofield Pass - parking - mileage to West Maroon Pass

Post by skochgj »

Is one allowed to leave a car a the TH on the Maroon Bells side of Schofield Pass to start a multi-day hike from there? And regarding Mileage, I'm having a hard time getting a mileage estimate from this East Fork/West Maroon Bells parking/Trail Head to the trail connecting Frigid Air Pass to West Maroon Pass (the traditional 4 pass loop). Does anyone have a link to a good map showing mileage between TH/intersections/passes? Thanks!

There are no restrictions for parking at the West Maroon trailhead. I just traced out the trail in Google Earth and it is 3.1 miles from the trailhead to the Frigid
Air Pass intersection.
