Cheapest way to get to Mt. Sneffels?
I'm flying to Colorado for Mt. Sneffels. What's the cheapest way to reach Sneffels in Ouray?

Haha...well you do need to give more information.curiousaurus wrote:Tell me how that goes, smart ass.SchralpTheGnar wrote:Walking
Such as when are you flying to CO.
Where are you flying to?
Will you have transportation?
Do you have gear?
How much time do you have?
And walking would be pretty cheap!

From Denver, you could probably take the Greyhound to Montrose, and then hitch to Ouray, then hitch again to the trailhead. Greyhound also goes to Telluride, but depending on the time of year, that's not going to work out all that well, even if you're super close.
Lots of little bus systems in the area.
Perhaps rent a car - you could take a bus from the airport to Denver and take the Bustang West line to Glenwood Springs, then rent the car from there. Or ride a bike from Glenwood Springs - no additional fee!

Flying from New Hampshire in late February. Not sure which airport I should fly to. Flight fare to Denver is the cheapest, but I don't want to drive 300 miles from Denver to Ouray. But if that's the cheapest option, I will. Or like justiner suggested, I can take a bus to Montrose, and hitch to Ouray/Sneffels. I have 5 days total.

Perhaps to get a feel of what you're getting into:

Def. check with avalanche conditions. The standard route seems like a perfect slope to slide? Perhaps the SW Ridge is the way to go?

Check flights into Montrose, Durango, or Grand Junction. Sometimes they are expensive and sometimes they aren't much more than flying to Denver.
Sneffels isn't one of the hardest of the winter 14ers, but it does rank high on the danger list when it comes to winter 14ers. Have a plan B as it's hard to predict conditions until the time is very close.
Also, I mean no offence by this, but your previous posts indicate that you are inexperienced. A winter ascent of Sneffels is a very poor choice for a beginner. There are much better/safer peaks/14ers in Colorado to cut your teeth on a winter ascent. Save Sneffels for when you have more experience on winter 14ers.

This might be tough, especially since the mine fires any employees who pick up hitch hikers.hitch again to the trailhead

Read the eight winter trip reports for Sneffels In 14ers.com. People either used skis, snowshoes or crampons in the deep snow and subzero temperatures. Hope you have this equipment along with winter experience iusing them.

I believe there is a shuttle from Montrose to Telluride daily and that same shuttle or Gray Hound may go to Grand Junction also. I usually fly into Grand Junction From PA. Flying into Durango would be closer but more expensive. Good Luck... whether you summit or not, it sounds like an adventure. This is what we live for. Be safe.

Rental cars are not that expensive...the freedom is way worth it considering the gear you will need.
Have you looked into flights into Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, Colorado Springs, etc.? Everything is 5-6 hours to Ouray. One last suggestion is to look into Allegiant Airlines. They fly into Grand Junction from Las Vegas, and it always feels like flying to Vegas is always cheap. It takes some planning, but that airline is really cheap.
