13er Alpine Lake Conditions

Post by Mountaincuts »

I'm looking to hit a 13er or 14er this weekend and was hoping to combine that with some early season alpine lake fly fishing. Has anyone passed any 9,000-11,000 ft lakes recently that have thawed out?

This year it might be harder to find a lake that is still iced over than one that is thawed out. Both North and South Crestone Lakes were thawed out as of last weekend.

Lake Haiyaha in Rocky Mountain National Park had thin floating ice over most of its surface last Saturday. Not quite on the way to or from any 13ers, but it's an option. Black Lake and Frozen Lake at the upper end of Glacier Gorge might also be recently melted- there was a lot of snow up there last week.

Is the Laramie River Road open? The Medicine Bows got an average amount of snow this winter and may be slow to melt out.

The road was open mid May last year when there was a lot more snow

Found lots of snow still above about 10,400' in the Comanche Peak Wilderness. The view of the Rawahs looked snowy.
