Roads Closed Near Fairplay?
I'm thinking of going to Mt. Sherman this weekend and a friend of mine said that the roads south of Fairplay are closed due to the fire. Is this true? Should we hold off on Sherman and choose another summit?

Yes, the road to Sherman from Fairplay is closed. You could go from the leadville side but it's really smokey.

Where did you see that CR 18 to Fourmile is closed? I can't find that info.KansanClimber wrote:Yes, the road to Sherman from Fairplay is closed.

Currently CDOT shows US 285 closed between Fairplay and Antero Junction, both directions. The most current info is here:

Google Maps is showing a detour via Hwy 9 and US 24 through Hartsel that probably adds 20 minutes.

Yep, can confirm. Coming back from Huron Wednesday I drove past the southern closure, and there were signs all over the place recommending highway 9 for anyone going north. Anyone wanting to do Sherman should use the Leadville side.

Re: Roads Closed Near Fairplay?
I think you could still access it? You would just have to take a round about way thru that subdivision that's on the north side of County Rd 18? I'm trying to remember where the CDOT trucks were parked but I think it was before County Rd 18, necessitating the detour.
Of course whether it would be enjoyable with smoke in the area is a different question. I'd head somewhere else.

From Denver, what would be a good alternative peak? I've done most of the front range and mosquito. Sherman was the last one for Mosquito.

If you're looking for an alternative as short as Sherman, maybe try Princeton (upper TH), or Huron (4WD). Some longer easier alternatives could be La Plata, Harvard, Massive.screejunkie wrote:From Denver, what would be a good alternative peak?

Re: Roads Closed Near Fairplay?
I went up the Lulu Gulch route, and below treeline (and really up to about 13k) it was definitely a factor -- nothing that turned me around, but enough that I couldn't ignore it and went a little slower. Up high I could see all the haze but couldn't smell it anymore. Going down the standard route I didn't notice anything though, and the weather yesterday might have changed things for the better.bketron2 wrote:How was the smoke up there?hellmanm wrote:Yep, can confirm.
