Devil's Causeway

Post by jsf80238 »

I'd like to know whether to expect snow there tomorrow (11,800) ft. I will accept:
- Boots-on-the-ground reports.
- Educated guesses.
- Uneducated guesses.

Thank you

I'm not sure how helpful this will be - but I did Flat Top on memorial day. The causeway was a huge, scary cornice then. I imagine it's melted out some since then, but I'd still be prepared for a lot of snow. Bring traction, ice axe, and be prepared to turn back if necessary.

Edit: FYI, we approached from the south via the Hooper Lakes trail, so no real beta of the rest of the trail.

I'll be around there too, but not planning on the Causeway. I can say that enough stuff has melted below treeline in Summit County that I'm willing to take the trip. Above is a different story, Gore and Tenmile are still buried, but northern CO got less snow than the rest of the state did and I suspect snow will be less of a problem in flatter areas.

There is always snow there in June, even in dry years.

Percentages in northern Colorado were lower rather than snowpack lower. Averages are higher in northern Colorado, so even a 100% snowpack in much of Northern Colorado would be greater than a 200% snowpack in several other areas in Colorado. The record breaking year (1997) in the Arkansas Drainge for example, barely had enough snowpack to reach an average year in the Yampa/White Basin.

Currently the Yampa/White River drainages (of which Devils Causeway is a part of) and the Laramie/North Platte drainages are holding the most snow in the state by quite a large margin.

The Forest Service says "being snow shoes". I did not specifically ask about the causeway itself, but I don't have snow shoes with me. I guess I will reschedule for late July and do something else instead.

So take some skis and shred that gnar!

Just got back. Too much snow in the trees.
