Need Help With Identification

Post by ksuzanne428 »

Hi folks! I have been using 14ers.com for some time to get helpful route information, etc. I hiked my first 14er in 2013, Handies Peak. I have hiked Fairview Peak (a 13er) now 6 times, but this year, the snow was still blocking the route to the base, so it was a no-go.

So... I need some help. I just know some of y'all can identify mountains. I took my shots off the top of Cumberland Pass, between Pitkin, Colorado and TinCup, Colorado. I am shooting West. I just want to be able to share the pic, maybe enter the pic in a contest, and know what I'm looking at. Any peaks you can identify would be amazing, if you can identify the range, even better.

Thanks in advance for your help, I truly appreciate it!

I believe you are looking at peaks in the Fossil Ridge Wilderness... I don't know exactly which ones are which, but I believe in your first picture, the smaller looking peak in the very front, is Fairview Mountain. That could be a start for ya...

I think you are right about Fossil Ridge Wilderness... Fairview is more to the left on these shots... out of the frame. I can always identify Fairview... also the fire lookout is always visible, so I know that one. This could be more Northwest, if truth be told. I wish I was standing there now, I would do better about knowing my direction and where I was looking! :(

Could that possibly be the group with Taylor, Pearl, Star, Teocalli, et.al.?

Happy trails! :-D
As if none of us have ever come back with a cool, quasi-epic story instead of being victim to tragic rockfall, a fatal stumble, a heart attack, an embolism, a lightning strike, a bear attack, collapsing cornice, some psycho with an axe, a falling tree, carbon monoxide, even falling asleep at the wheel getting to a mountain. If you can't accept the fact that sometimes "s**t happens", then you live with the illusion that your epic genius and profound wilderness intelligence has put you in total and complete control of yourself, your partners, and the mountain. How mystified you'll be when "s**t happens" to you! - FM

For future peak ID, the $5.00 app PeakFinder Ar works really well! Download peak information cells when you have coverage, and then you can use the app to identify many peaks when you don’t. Doesn’t have EVERY peak, but does have quite a good selection.

The first image is looking northwest to the southeastern end of the Elk Range. In the foreground are Park Cone and Matchless Mountain. Beyond them the prominent-looking peaks from left to right are Castle Peak (14er), Star Peak, Italian Mountain (the closest of the ones in the background), and Taylor Peak (on the far right). Castle Peak is almost 30 miles from Cumberland Pass!
The second image is looking due north towards Independence Pass at the 13ers in the Sawatch Range immediately south of Independence Pass. Grizzly Peak (the highest 13er in Colorado) is the tall one on the right. In front of Grizzly and to the left are Prize, Anderson and Petroleum Peaks (from right to left).
Beautiful Shots!

Building off this, I found the spot the pictures were taken in caltopo and used the viewer to imitate your pictures:
