Fall Foliage 2023

Post by BostonBD »

I'm heading down to Telluride for the weekend. It looks like a slow start to this fall foliage season. Does anyone have any photos or updates from the Telluride area? Thanks BD

I've seen a few pictures from Red Mountain Pass, some things are changing there, you might want to detour up there on the way to Telluride.

Looking down on Ophir from Lookout there was not even a hint of yellowing on Tuesday. Red Mountain Pass had a few minor patches but nothing to write home about. Most color I saw was probably on Purgatory Flats but even then only 5-10% change on Monday.

As for the drive back to the Denver area, zero change in the Vail Valley on Tuesday, I was surprised. I thought a few stands would have started but nada.

Seems we are headed for a very late season…I’m concerned we may get to a point everything just turns brown and dies.

The area around Winter Park and Fraser is starting to turn but the peak is probably at least a week away.

I normally go to the San Juans the third weekend of September, but maybe 10/6-8 might be better? That’s my next weekend I’m in town.

Or what / where do y’all recommend for the first full weekend of October?

Kebler Pass should be good around then, also around Ridgway. Maybe people will update this thread with observations and we'll get some clues on where to go.

Here is Telluride a year ago on October 4. Even that late still a mix of green and yellow. Seems like things were turning a little later than usual, which supposedly is the case this year too.
