Skimo Condition/Report Resources?

Post by Danger_D »

Hey y'all. Now that spring is here I'm itching to get out to ski some peaks. I've been watching CAIC forecasts, weather reports, and any conditions/TRs that pop up on 14ers.com, but there often isn't much information about some of the less travelled peaks. Are there some other resources out there where people post condition updates more frequently for skimo/backcountry conditions that y'all look at? Any info (is the skin track in? Any new deadfall? etc) can be a big help. Thanks!

Also, if anyone's been up Herman Gulch or Pettingell recently I'd love to hear an update

I follow #skithe14ers and #skithe13ers Instagram hash tags. Until recently, it's been a great beta resourse, but Instagram did something to the algorithm, so now the posts with the highest number of "likes" show up first even though the photos were taken 252 weeks ago. So that's definitely been a bummer this spring.

Don’t be afraid the be the beta either, sometimes part of the adventure is going off into the unknown.

I was up Herman this week. The main trail is a luge track a 12ft section of dirt down low, but I would expect that to be bigger after this weather. There is plenty of snow up high. the NE face of Bethel is wind-hammered above treeline. Lots of sastrugi. I saw some tracks on the southerlies of Machebauf that looked great mid-morning. If anyone gets up there Sunday the 14th, I'm interested in the depth of freeze on the southern aspects.
