Looking for ride to any 14er trailhead - stuck in Silverthorne

Post by Letmesleepzz »

Hi!

Not sure if this is the correct place for a request like this, so please point me towards better resources that you know of.

I (32M) drove out to Colorado from ON, Canada, specifically to bag 14ers. I've suddenly found myself stuck in Silverthorne until at least next Tuesday (Jul 30), as my car is currently in the shop due to some bad luck.

I was hoping to connect with some folks looking to send any 14er summits Sunday-Tuesday, hitch a ride to the trailhead, partner up for the attempt, and potentially meet up (when my car is fixed) for more adventures until my departure on Aug 20.

I've already summited ~20 Colorado 14ers (lifetime), and 6 so far on this trip (counting DeCeLiBron), so I'm relatively experienced, and sufficiently acclimated.

Anyway, let me know if you're interested in partnering up. I'm more inclined to technical routes (Class 3+), although at this point I'm not particular, if it means getting a lift.

I'm willing to pitch in for fuel, post-summit beers in town, whatever. My only preferences are that y'all are cool people, pick me up/drop off back in town, and are interested in 14ers I've yet to conquer.

Message me if interested :)

"Stuck" in Silverthorne, ...not the worst place to be stuck in. Better than being stuck in LAX last week with the global IT snafu, lines the length of the terminal.

Absent anyone responding here, there is a ton to do in Silverthorne area, am sure you can either find someone in the local climbing gym, maybe best bet to just rent a car depending how long your car will be out, or Uber? get a bike, go fishing, rent a boat/canoe/kayak, play golf or am sure the many ski areas have summer activities. Even reclimbing local mountains you've already done.

Enterprise has a car rental there, think Turo might work also.

Yeah, you're right, I'm hyperbolizing, there's plenty to do, I just wanted to prioritize hiking 14ers if possible.

I wish I could help but I don't think my schedule will work with yours. If you're unable to find a ride I highly recommend the 13er Red Peak in the Gore Range. The Gore Range is known for difficult scrambles and approaches, but Red Peak is fairly accessible. The trailhead is just outside of Silverthorne. It's a long day, but a gorgeous hike (except for the burn scar at the start) with one of my favorite views in Colorado. The peak is at the southern end of the Gores so the rest of the range is in full view with the sun at your back. The route from Buffalo Mountain Trailhead tops out at Class 2, around 14 miles.

There's a shuttle that leaves from Silverton to Molas Pass every day to get hikers back onto the Colorado Trail, just grab a ride from them. Plenty of hiking and backpacking can be had from there. Ask anyone that's wearing a Melanzana midlayer in town when/where/how much.

Seconded, especially because the Summit Stage, the free county bus system, has a stop at this trailhead on the Wildernest loop. Buffalo Mountain is also an option if you’re willing to settle for a 12er.

Other bus-able options (all under 14k’, sorry) include Jacque Peak via Copper. Jacque is a 13er, and there’s a bus stop at Copper’s East Village. You could also access Peaks 8, 9, and 10 (also thirteeners) in the Tenmile from the same bus stop if you cross Highway 91 and get on the Colorado Trail from the Far East Lot.

I believe there’s also a stop at the Bald Mountain (another thirteener) winter trailhead, which doesn’t add on a hideous amount of mileage (less than 2 miles roundtrip, I believe), though you might be able to hitch a ride up to the summer TH from there if desired. You’d want to double-check the Summit Stage website to make sure there actually is a stop in that area, though, since I’m not 100% certain about that.

Buffalo Mountain is a little closer although right across the valley from Red Peak. Same TH actually. Relatively short, but steep hike at the end of Ryan Gulch Rd. I'm pretty sure that is on the local bus route. I think the bus is free in Summit Co? You will probably see a lot of mountain goats up there for an added bonus. It's only a 12er, but it's a Gore Range Peak!

If you are bored, there is shuttle for Breckenridge to Quandary trailhead. Free buses from Silverthorne to Breckenridge via Frisco (takes a long time).

If you're up for lots of miles, no summit, but a sick pass with tons of wildlife, check out Red Buffalo Pass. You can hike from Silverthorne to East Vail, then take the buses (I think you'd have to transfer once or twice) back to Silverthorne. The trail starts at a bus stop in Silverthorne and pops out not far from a bus stop in Vail.

Not 14ers but the Peak 1 - Peak 10 traverse is pretty epic. Alternatively just do Peak 1 (most of the elevation gain) for a nice workout day hike.
