Winter 12er/13er descents

Post by Veory »

Looking to find peaks that tend to be ridable from the summit or near summit in winter. I am not looking for good snow (although that's a bonus), I don't care if I'm riding 2000 feet of sastrugi, and I would prefer not to die in an avalanche.

If you all know anything, particularly in the front, tenmile/mosquito, sawatch, or sangres I'd love to hear it.

To add the first beta, I skied from the summit of peak 9 to Breckenridge last week, via the Southeast face

Maybe an excess of beta... a friend of mine made this CalTopo map with nearly every line on Front Range 13ers. They can be sorted by season and other. It's been hugely helpful to me.

Mt Helen's Sky Ramp (east face)
Peak 1 east ridge to the ironing board
Red/Red/Hoosier from Penn Gulch
Usually Peak 4 from Miners Creek depending on how it's loaded
Sometimes Guyot's east bowl also depending on loading patterns
Front side of Buffalo from Buffalo Cabin trail
Sometimes the east bowl of Crystal depending on slide hazard. Access from Spruce Ck.

Most of these are generally skiable mid-winter but keep in mind that unusual weather creates unusual avalanches. Many of these options - Guyot comes to mind - can be wind slabby and dangerous or scoured down to rock on any given day.
Traveling light is the only way to fly.

Dyer mtn from the west (Leadville side) and Evans B are generally skiable in winter(like) conditions

Whoops. Got my Front range ski maps confused. I was thinking of this which is just general Front range lines that is sortable by season. Some overlap.
