Break Ins on Como Road

Hello, was just studying up on the TH conditions for the lovely Como Rd and was seeing that earlier in the summer people were getting their vehicles broken into at the 8800ft parking area. Back windows being smashed, etc. Has anyone seen or experienced this recently? Was curious to know if this is still happening on a regular basis. And any other recent update on road conditions would be welcomed.

Had my car parked up at 8800 ft overnight 2 weeks ago. Didn’t have a problem. Prolly at least another dozen cars up there and didn’t see any problems. I’d say the odds of something happening to you are low enough that it’s not worth being worried about. No guarantee of course..

I was a little concerned about it too so I just made sure to not leave keys or anything of value in there to tempt anyone haha. As far as road conditions go, still awful as always. Most cars with any clearance could go to 8800 if you go slow enough I think. Have fun.

My Dad and I were parked a little below 8800' feet on the Lake Como road last August and his back window was broken. We didn't leave anything valuable but we did have a bag with empty Tupperware in the backseat. My advice is to not leave anything visible in your vehicle. You could even go so far as leaving your vehicle unlocked and taping a sign on the window that says "It's unlocked!".

I was up there yesterday. Drove to the lake, did see a lot of vehicles in the lower elevations that showed no signs of damage. My buddy parked at 8000 and got in with me (his truck wouldn't make it to the lake) and it was fine when we returned two days later.

I camped at one of the pullouts near 8800' Monday (8/18) night. I left the vehicle around 0345 on Tuesday, and when I returned around noon, the back window was busted out and several items were taken. Ironically, the most valuable items were intact. The cooler was completely cleaned out, as well as every other food item in the vehicle. Some other minor camping equipment like stove, etc, was taken as well.

I've never had any problems at trailheads in all these years. Guess I got complacent. Heads up on leaving vehicles on Lake Como road.

Would I be a fool to assume that if I drive up to 9800 to 10,000 feet and park, the chances of my vehicle being broken into would be greatly diminished?
