Pikes Peak this weekend

Post by quinnwolf »

Hello, does anybody know if summiting Pikes Peak via the Northwest slopes route from the Crags TH will be possible on this Friday, June 19 2026 with the Hill Climb practice going on? Do I have to wait until after 8:30am (when the road opens to normal traffic) to hike above Devil's Playground?

There's probably some Press Releases out that'll describe access, but you can always call the PP Info/Rangers and ask them. They're usually super helpful and call back if you have to leave a VM. Could also just do Barr Trail...

Based on the spectator guide, there's little chance you'll be able to cross before 8:30. In fact, since they charge a LOT even for practice days, you probably won't even be able to get all the way to Devil's Playground until after that. https://ppihc.org/wp-content/uploads/20 ... ground.pdf

Many years ago I hiked Pikes on a practice day during the week without knowing, and I was able to cross Devil's Playground with no issue apart from waiting between cars. Maybe that's changed, but I don't recall it being an issue...

The spectator guide only says that the Devils Playground trail will be closed above the Playground on race day. If that is the case and the trail will be open on Friday, then trail users should be allowed to cross the highway. I'm planning to go up there on Saturday and hope to be able to get to the summit - some how. A friend of mine hiked up there last year on the day before the race (when they were still practicing) and he said he made it to the summit.
