I’ve been on this site long enough to have seen many people completely trashed for having an opinion that is slightly different than what would be considered the norm here. I suppose that’s the age we live in now. The comments in this thread have not come remotely close to reaching that level. Just sayin’

Thanks for saying that.

And no-one was talking down to anyone (I think?). On top of that, the OP did not give a sexual orientation or reason why.
I just think its just a non-issue. The community accepts whoever regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, bad grammar, or food preferences. Its not an issue so don't make it one.
I have a friend who runs an Instagram account that just posts about queer people hiking/mountaineering/etc. These posts are -- when they make it outside the queer community -- met with an overwhelming barrage of incredibly dispiriting negative comments along the general lines of "Why are you talking about this, no one cares? Also, I'm so accepting."
No one posts these comments about posts related to any other affiliation group. No one tells folks posting about hiking while being a parent/grandparent/woman (or with) that their posts/questions about it are "irrelevant", nor would you see comments like this when people discuss climbing with a group of co-workers, nor to a group of folks with vision/physical impairments, etc.
"Curious if anyone has ever done all the 14ers as a duo with their grandkid." "I'm sure someone has, but it's irrelevant, what a lame post." See any difference?
If you're so accepting of queer climbers, you could've just not said anything, instead of telling folks talking about queer climbers their conversation is lame. Comments like that bum me out every time I see them.
Go back and read the forum post about someone who wanted to know if they were the first solo woman finisher... and you'll see this thread is super tame in comparison.
I imagine there would be some "lame" responses if you started a forum post about left handed finishers, or finishers with green eyes, etc. How about we celebrate all finishers regardless of their gender, orientation, color eyes, size shoes, etc.

There is a difference (maybe). While being a grandparent might indicate being old and a different kind of challenge, being LGBT seems to have no bearing on physical ability.michaelrpetrick wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 11:44 am"Curious if anyone has ever done all the 14ers as a duo with their grandkid." If someone is the first LGBT president or whatever, I can see that as a challenge and something of importance of overcoming an obstacle, but I don't see why it would make a difference when climbing the 14ers.
Although I do trips with some LGBT people, I'm not about to ask them how it affects their climbing ability. I've never even thought about it. I guess if someone is LGBT and can tune in to how it affects their climbing ability, I'm all ears. Until that happens, I'll just be friends with and climb with any safe and compatible person whether straight or LGBT.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Re: Any LGBT 14er finishers?
You folks are missing the point. Nobody is arguing that sexual orientation has a broad impact on one's climbing ability. The point is that when you're a member of a protected class (no, not when you have green eyes, or when you're left handed), you face many obstacles you have to overcome throughout your life, big and small. It's nice to know some other folks who can relate to your experiences and who also have the same interests (e.g., hiking) that you do. That's very likely the reason why OP asked the question and why others chimed in, and that's also why it isn't an irrelevant topic.

Regardless which inference you made from the OP (it's not clear), it looks like we are winning this debate.

It's their loss, wasting time outdoors instead of enjoying civil liberties and gorging on awesome Romanian pizza.

There's just no way to square spending the time to make a "Who cares?" post in a thread like this and not coming across like a bigot or a bully. If you truly didn't care, you wouldn't have even opened the thread. But some of you did and you tried to shut down someone else's conversation. Why?

2- Because work was boring.
3- To prevent this thread's unraveling spiral.
4- As a public service announcement.
5- Because popcorn needs a good movie.
6- Because lame posts are lame.
7- Because hiking and LGBT have nothing to do with each other.
8- Because we care.
9- For the money. Its always about the money.

10- Spending time on non-issues is always more rewarding than debating military-industrial complex, globalization or social stratification methods that The Man uses to keep us enslaved.
