I have also have plantar facilitis and it's getting really bad. Any tips or things you have found that relieve it?
I got some good arch supports from Good Feet. Somewhat expensive but worth it.
I got custom insoles and haven't had an issue since. Expensive but also worth it. Cortisone shots helped the initial pain go away and the insoles kept it from coming back.

Thanks for the advice on the plantar fasciitis. There are no Good Feet stores where I am, but I'll have to make the trip to visit a store. In the meantime I got some inserts from Amazon. I also got a night splint from a medical supply store.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

14er snowflakes: Got Longs at the tail end of 2023 then 2 more (one of them twice), plus scouted out Capitol, Pyramid and Huron in spring as a preview of sorts.

13er snowflakes: 6 new 13er flakes plus 2 repeats

14ers 2nd lap: Got 3 more 2nd lap peaks done, 16 to go (this is going to take me a LOT longer than the FKT folks, lol)

14ers calendar grid: halfway on G/T and have 5 months covered for Longs.

14ers sub-summits: Just need to go grab SE Longs.

13ers - Cents, Bicents, ranked, unranked: Ten new 13ers overall including Teakettle (former cent), Mamma (bicent), plus 4 repeats (all in winter).

Zone completions: expanded footprints in a few areas - slowly connecting parts of the Sawatch.

Great Traverses: targeting LB-B Traverse and a modified Crestones Traverse with North Buttress.

Scrambling: Loved Coffeepot and Teakettle and looking forward to the Traverses and other potential scrambling fun.

Partnering: After partnering with lots of different people last year, I've been largely regressing to hermit hiking this year, with a couple exceptions. I don't mind going solo but it's nice to be able to share the experiences with others so I probably need to reach out more.

Good time for a check in as the season is now in full swing!

Nolan's 14 attempt - I don't feel like I'm in as good a shape as I was last time this year, but training has been ramping up. Hoping to scout Elbert to Missouri this weekend as long as my car is fixed in time. :-SS

Chip away at the 14ers/13ers - I think I've done one new 13er so far this year. :lol: Hoping to get more but very much a secondary priority this year, at least until after the Nolan's attempt.

A couple more winter 14ers - My biggest success of this list, finally knocked out a few more of the low hanging fruit close to home, still pretty light on snowflakes overall.

San Jacinto project (CA) - Almost certainly not happening this year for timing/budget.

Hike with other people - I've been slightly more social than average, though as summer picks up I'm probably going to have to prioritize solo training hikes. Though if I count some of my volunteer work that is always social by nature, so maybe I should give myself more credit.

Another Cascade volcano, like Adams or Shasta nope
More explorations of the Alps and Andes
Get to 6000 m if possible
Mont Blanc or another well-known peak
75K vert halfway there, at the year's halfway point
Keep working on the 13ers. I have no desire to do them all, or even the Centennials, but just explore 4 so far this season, including 3 Centennials
Transition to as much barefoot hiking as possible yes, but my toe is busted right now
Visit a few new countries yes, two new countries
25 ski days 21, but there's still the Southern Hemisphere season

General stuff:

Try to stay healthy
Try to improve my mental state
Try to hike with partners so far, so good- but this will be more difficult as I get slower
Buy art yup, picked up a few choice pieces
Make music, get better at playing an instrument
Improve my cooking skills Not better at cooking, but I've been trying a lot of new recipes
Eat at more Michelin star restaurants
Learn a new language
Socialize and entertain more often
Meet more of you folks

In addition to my yearly goals for Colorado peaks, I have a mid to late June road trip planned with my wife to travel the Maine coast eating real seafood, going to Acadia National Park, and then crossing over a few states to hit some peaks that are on my bucket list. It would be nice to hang out in the White Mountains again and scale some more of those peaks but it will have to wait until another time.

Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont:
1. Mount Katahdin COMPLETED ON JUNE 25TH taking the Helon Taylor trail over Pamola Peak, Chimney Peak, and the South Peak. Returned via the Saddle Trail.
2. Mount Washington COMPLETED ON JUNE 28TH taking the Ammonoosuc Trail and looping back on the Jewell Trail. This was an interesting day. Mt Washington Observatory recorded 83 mph gusts that morning, the lowest wind chill for the day was 8 degrees, there was rime ice on the rocks, the summits were socked in with fog, and the low temperature for the day was 27 degrees which was also a record for the date. I arrived at the summit just before 9:00 AM but the winds were still high and I suspect the temps were still near their lows. I was almost blown over twice trying to get a summit photo by the sign.
3. Mount Monroe Due to the high winds and cold temperatures when I reached the Lake of the Clouds Hut, I decided to skip Mt Monroe and head straight for Mt Washington. It wasn't far away but I still couldn't see it in the fog. And I was hiking with a separated left shoulder courtesy of my blunders when completing Katahdin a few days before. I decided Mt Washington was enough.
4. Mount Clay (sub-peak) Did not complete. See text for number 3, Mt Monroe above.
5. Mount Mansfield Did not complete due to rain and thunderstorms.

Colorado:
1. Humboldt Peak
2. Crestone Needle
3. Crestone Peak
4. Pike's Peak
5. Long's Peak
6. Mount Meeker
7. Redcloud Peak
8. Sunshine Peak
9. San Luis Peak
10. Mount Shavano
11. Tabeguache Peak
12. Mount of the Holy Cross
13. PT 13,248
14. PT 13,831 (Holy Cross Ridge)

I went to Denver today just to go to Good Feet and bought a bunch of stuff. Fingers crossed.

Yesterday's hike of 10 miles and only 2000 feet gain was killing my feet on the way back.

LarryM wrote: Tue Dec 12, 2023 11:11 am I'll dispense with the intangible and tangential goals this year:

(1) Mexican Volcanoes in the fall - Pica de Orizaba, etc.

Not going to happen, due to my new found acting/singing hobbies.

(2) At least 2 new 14ers - most likely Antero and Oxford - & at least 4 repeats.

(3) At least 4 new 13ers - tentatively American/Jones/Niagara & one other - & at least 2 repeats.

(4) Weston pass to Mosquito pass - I list this every year & still haven't attempted it. I need to convince one of my friends to do it with me.

(5) 4 pass loop - another one that's been on my list for a while.
While for a variety of reasons I met none of these goals, despite that it has (so far) been a very successful & fun year in the mountains for me:

-only one new 14er and 2 repeats, but the new one was Antero via Little Browns Creek, which was quite lovely;

-only 2 new 13ers (Paiute and Eva), but 8 repeats;

-also 2 new 12ers (Toll and Independence) and one new 10er (Hahns Peak), plus several 12er and 11er repeats;

-several other non-peak days in the high mountains;

-the intangible and tangential goals that I didn't list were met and exceeded:

--lots of fun with friends and with my partner in the mountains;

--significant recovery of fitness and speed - basically turned back the clock 4 years;

--mileage slightly below where I want it to be (1,314 miles so far), but vert is on track for my best year of vert ever (319,500 feet so far, on target for over 450,000 feet).

--the reason that I'm not going to hit the Mexican volcanoes this year is new found singing and acting hobbies (more specifically, I am performing in a local dinner theater production when I would have gone to Mexico to climb the volcanoes). Given the joy that I'm getting from those hobbies, combined with continued trail running/mountain "running," I can't really complain about this. Maybe next year.

-and finally: that fact that I can still do all this at the age of 64 is something that I am incredibly grateful for.

I did it. Currently at 402. Aiming for 5-10 more peaks this year. Next year's goal will be another 50 fifty peaks or so.

at the time of authoring these goals, getting engaged and subsequently married was not on my 2024 bingo card. suffice it to say, that's a large part of the reason that some of these just didn't pan out
two lunches wrote: Fri Dec 01, 2023 10:37 am Colfax- 2-Day Mile High Challenge : wild success! i loved running in the 5K with my dogs, but would like to take a break in 2025 so i can see you guys at the spring event
Stay Healthy : so-so... i've been dealing with some persistent back issues, but (so far) it's only kept me off the mountains for one weekend
Renew WFA certification : unlikely.
Complete two more segments of the CT : FAIL.
Chi Basin trip, sans D&SNG : FAIL.

And adhering to tradition, one vague goal and one that's probably out of reach
Spend some quality time with my ice axe and crampons : snowmass with snow in the mass, two snowflakes, and two ski descents. rad year in the snow f'sho
More 14ers than 13ers- haven't done this since 2017. curious what that would look like! : what this looked like was A LOT OF FUN. i have loved exploring the elks and sangres this year, and re-peaking some of my first summits has been a lovely experience, as well.

madmattd wrote: Sat Dec 02, 2023 9:28 pm This worked well for me in 2023 (crushed most of my goals), so I guess I should try it again!

General Goals:
(10) new ranked 13ers 8 so far, plus 1 repeat.
(5) new ranked 14ers 4 so far.
(4) snowflake ranked summits >13k Check! 6 14ers, 1 13er between Jan 1 and the start of Spring.
(6) nights on trail (backpacking) 7 thus far - 4 of those in Canyonlands which was awesome!
400mi hiking 275mi so far, a little off pace.
125k vert 93k ytd. A little off pace but not by much.
Continue working on my C3/+ experience Nebulous goal, but doing quite well on that with several C3+ 13er summits in the Sangres and Gores, Snowmass, and North Maroon.

Specific Goals:
Chicago Basin trip - 4 14ers + Jupiter in a perfect world Not happening. Will be at the top of 2025's list.
Snowmass Revenge (or at least attempt) CHECK!
Crestone Peak Might be slipping away, but still time.
Attend Fall, Winter gatherings.

Other Outdoorsy Goals:
100mi BCXC skiing Got in 118mi over 11 ski days this winter.
1000mi on the bike 480mi so far. Got off to a slow (lazy) start this year, unlikely to reach this goal.
Stretch goal: run a half marathon I can't seem to run any distance without major shin pain anymore, so seems very unlikely. I'll be happy to get back to running 2-3 5Ks/week without pain again.
